Artist Biography

Joseph Orr is chronicling the American landscape in it’s purest form.  Sketches made on location, near his home in the Ozarks and the environments he likes to visit, become finished paintings capturing the essence of the scene.  Attention to light and shadow spark a mood in each work of art.  Orr’s studies are centered on scenes of solitude, allowing the viewer to escape the pressures of everyday living.  “That place doesn’t have to profound or monumentally significant,” he says, “It just has to express something in me that another person can understand and appreciate.”

As an early champion of the acrylic painting medium, Orr is recognized as an important artist in the contemporary art world and has contributed chapters and instructional material to several publications on acrylic painting.  His work has been featured in Workshop, Art of the West, and Southwest Art.  Orr’s paintings have been included in The Arts for the Parks ‘Top 100’ Competition in Jackson, Wyoming six times.  In 1993, his entry won the Historic Art Award.  His work is included in many prominent collections including the NCAA collection in Indianapolis, Indiana and The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Missouri.
